The Life-Changing
Magic of Tidying up
by Marie Kondo
FAST VERSION
There are two kinds of Tidying:
1. Deciding whether to throw it away.
2. Deciding where to put it.
"You can't tidy, if you've never learned how" -Marie Kondo.
First of all, you must visualise your ideal life before the tidying process begins.
Tidy by the order of categories (Not by location, bedroom, kitchen etc.)
and then, the easiest to hardest decisions to discard, or else you'll get tired and stop.
Going from easiest to hardest, you will grow in confidence and build self-trust.
i.e. Start with clothes, not emotional memorabilia.
These factors make it harder to choose whether to keep or discard:
A) Physical value (cost)
B) Functional value (usefulness)
C) Informational value (helpfulness)
D) Emotional value (significance)
E) Rarity
So the best sequence for easiest to hardest decisions is:
Clothes, Books, Papers, Miscellaneous Items, and Keepsakes.
Gather all the items in the house and place every item on the floor.
Then choose what to keep, one by one, by holding it and asking 'does it spark joy?'
Listen to your gut feeling, if it doesn't spark joy, thank it for whatever it taught you and let it go with gratitude, placing it in the trash bag.
Note: If you need something for your work that has practical use but doesn't spark emotional joy. Then it has no emotional value but it has functional value. So keep it.
